LexisNexis Urges Canadian Lawyers to Put Accountability at the Centre of AI Adoption

News Brief, October 1, 2026

LexisNexis Canada is urging lawyers to make verification, oversight and clear internal policies central to their use of artificial intelligence.

In a recent blog post, the company argues that AI’s ability to produce polished legal text does not change who is accountable for the finished work. Lawyers still need to assess the underlying reasoning, protect client information and check supporting sources.

The post highlights a gap between convincing language and reliable legal analysis. An AI-generated summary can overlook a case’s procedural context, while a draft clause can conflict with a client’s objectives despite reading smoothly.

LexisNexis recommends that firms establish rules covering approved tools, appropriate tasks, data handling, review responsibilities and disclosure expectations. It also encourages teams to document what reviewers checked and where lawyers exercised their own judgment.

For Canadian firms putting these principles into practice, the post offers review questions and links to provincial and territorial law society guidance.
