Walter Partners with McCarthy Tétrault on Legal AI

News Brief, September 10, 2025

McCarthy Tétrault joins Walter’s AI Joint Innovation Program to co-design and trial workflow-embedded AI tools in live legal environments.

Vancouver legaltech startup Walter has announced that McCarthy Tétrault LLP has joined its AI Joint Innovation Program, a collaboration with law firms to co-design AI tools tailored for transactional workflows.

The initiative emphasizes practical deployment, governance, and responsible adoption of AI. By embedding tools directly into daily work, Walter aims to move legal AI from flashy demos to trusted, workflow-integrated systems.

Founded by entrepreneur Ryan Wilson, Walter simplifies the fragmented legal ecosystem by consolidating contracts, cap tables, minute books, and client records into a unified digital platform. Earlier this month, the company launched its AI Agent, which works natively within Microsoft Word and Outlook to edit documents, preserve formatting, and draft client communications.

McCarthy Tétrault, one of Canada’s largest national firms, is working directly with Walter’s product and engineering teams to trial new features in live matters. The collaboration also includes developing governance frameworks to address risk, accuracy, and compliance, while providing structured, real-world feedback.

“Partnering with Walter enables our teams to shape how AI supports real legal work, not in a lab but inside the actual environment that our lawyers operate in,” said Matt Peters, National Leader of Transformation at McCarthy Tétrault. “We evaluate tools in context, measure actual value for clients, and build capabilities our lawyers can trust.”

Walter’s Co-Founder and CEO Ryan Wilson sees the partnership as validation of the platform’s mission. “McCarthy Tétrault’s involvement speaks volumes about their commitment to delivering value for clients,” he said. “We’re excited to support their exploration of how AI can enhance legal service delivery and client experience.”

With McCarthy Tétrault now part of its AI Joint Innovation Program, Walter is accelerating the shift from theory to practice—placing AI directly in the hands of lawyers and paving the way for broader adoption across the legal sector.
