The University of Calgary Faculty of Law, in partnership with The Legal Innovation Forum and a network of friends and colleagues, has announced the creation of the Jason Moyse Memorial Award in Law to honour the life and legacy of one of Canada’s most influential voices in legal innovation.
Jason Moyse, who passed away on December 2, 2024, was celebrated as a bold thinker, generous mentor, and tireless advocate for change in the legal profession. The new award will recognize a law student who embodies his visionary spirit — someone deeply engaged in exploring how technology and innovation can shape the future of law, business, and society.
Moyse’s career spanned private practice, in-house counsel roles, and leadership positions at the forefront of legal transformation. As co-founder of LawMade, he championed startups and forward-thinking initiatives redefining legal services delivery. His collaborations with organizations such as PwC, MaRS Discovery District, Stanford’s CodeX, and The Legal Innovation Forum established him as a cornerstone of the global legal innovation community.
The award will be endowed once $15,000 is raised, providing $3,000 annually for five years to support a deserving student. Donations to the initiative are eligible for charitable tax receipts, and contributions are being welcomed from across the legal and innovation sectors.
By inspiring the next generation of changemakers, the Jason Moyse Memorial Award aims to ensure that his impact on the evolution of the legal profession continues for years to come.
