Toronto-based legal AI company Spellbook is scaling fast—and now has the national recognition to match.
At the inaugural Built in Canada Awards, held last night at the Toronto-Dominion Centre, Spellbook’s Scott Stevenson took home the Rocketship Award, recognizing the fastest-growing Canadian company scaling at an extraordinary pace. The honour places the legaltech startup alongside a cohort of standout Canadian builders across sectors ranging from fintech to healthcare.
Hosted by Build Canada and Simple Ventures, in partnership with TD Innovation Partners and The Peak, the event brought together more than 200 entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers. Winners were selected from over 400 submissions spanning five provinces and eight sectors, underscoring the depth of Canada’s emerging innovation ecosystem.
Spellbook’s recognition highlights the growing momentum behind legal AI in Canada. As law firms increasingly adopt tools to streamline drafting, review, and analysis, companies like Spellbook are positioning themselves at the centre of a rapidly evolving legal services landscape.
The evening featured a keynote from Shopify President Harley Finkelstein and remarks from a lineup of prominent Canadian tech leaders, including Wealthsimple’s Mike Katchen and Neo Financial’s Jeff Adamson. Organizers framed the awards as part of a broader effort to celebrate and strengthen Canada’s builder culture.
“Canada is full of people who are choosing to build here—not because it’s easy, but because they believe in this country,” said Build Canada CEO Lucy Hargreaves.
Other winners included Clutch (Next Great Canadian Company), Ideogram (Proudly Canadian), and Felix Health (Impact Award), alongside leaders recognized for operational excellence, job creation, and ecosystem support.
For LegalTech.ca readers, Spellbook’s win signals more than just growth—it reflects the increasing global competitiveness of Canada’s legal innovation sector, as homegrown companies begin to scale with speed and ambition.
