Canadian legal AI educator Colin Lachance has refreshed LawQi with a learning experience aimed at a persistent challenge: helping legal professionals build foundational AI skills while facing pressure to adopt the technology quickly.
According to Lachance, the new experience introduces greater depth and interactivity, building on a platform that has served thousands of learners over the past two years. The redesign responds to user feedback and creates room for an expanding range of AI learning opportunities.
Its ambition extends beyond getting beginners started. LawQi is designed to help users develop foundational understanding while keeping pace with changes reshaping AI’s role in legal work.
As LegalTech.ca previously reported, LawQi grew out of Lachance’s work as innovator-in-residence at the Ontario Bar Association. The former CanLII CEO built the platform around learning through direct interaction with AI, giving lawyers opportunities to practise and experiment as they develop their understanding.
That approach has also reached the classroom. Earlier this year, the University of Ottawa’s Common Law Section integrated LawQi into Professor Amy Salyzyn’s AI and the Legal Profession course. Students used the platform to explore AI in a structured environment without exposing real client data, developing technical understanding alongside professional judgment.
The emphasis on judgment is central to the educational challenge. Learning to generate an answer is only a starting point. Legal professionals also need to understand how to question outputs, recognize limitations, and assess whether a tool is appropriate for a particular task.
LawQi’s established learning model supports that process through an embedded AI assistant that draws on course materials and can adapt explanations to the learner. Users engage with suggested prompts or bring their own questions, turning educational content into an interactive exercise.
With the refreshed experience, Lachance is seeking to make that foundation more accessible to novices while giving returning learners reasons to continue developing their skills as the technology evolves.
LawQi is currently advertising seven days of free access to the new experience.
