Toronto-based legal AI company Spellbook has launched an AI document editor that allows lawyers to edit, comment on, and redline contracts directly inside its Associate agent—without moving the documents into Microsoft Word.
The editor combines AI-assisted drafting with conventional document controls in a single workspace. After asking Associate to revise or redline an agreement, lawyers can review the proposed changes, accept or reject individual edits, modify clauses manually, and add comments before sending the document out.
Spellbook says the editor includes full formatting support and is designed to preserve the familiar mechanics of working in Word. Users can also select a citation generated by Associate and jump directly to the relevant clause rather than searching through the document.
The release is particularly geared toward matters involving multiple related documents. In one example provided by the company, a lawyer could ask Associate to revise four financing documents based on a term sheet, then inspect and refine hundreds of resulting changes across the document set without leaving the session.
Spellbook is positioning the editor as an answer to a persistent gap in legal AI workflows. Tools capable of generating extensive redlines may still require lawyers to export the results to Word for precise manual changes. Word-based AI assistants, meanwhile, often operate on one document at a time. The new editor brings multi-document AI work and hands-on editing into the same environment.
The launch follows Spellbook’s recent expansion into Google Docs, where its drafting and review features can be used without switching applications. Together, the releases reflect a broader push to reduce the handoffs between AI tools and the document software lawyers use to complete their work.
Spellbook says its platform is now used by more than 4,500 law firms and in-house legal teams worldwide. The company describes the new editor as a step toward reinventing the traditional word processor for AI-assisted legal work.
