Toronto-based patent intelligence company NLPatent has rebranded as Clerq, reflecting its evolution from an AI-powered research platform into a system that can complete patent research assignments from start to finish.
CEO and co-founder Stephanie Curcio announced the new identity on LinkedIn, explaining that NLPatent will remain the underlying intelligence and patent-specific model powering the platform. Clerq represents what that intelligence can now do: accept a research assignment, conduct the work and return a report containing analysis, reasoning and verifiable citations.
The name is a reference to a law clerk working under an attorney’s direction. Patent professionals can determine how much oversight to provide while retaining responsibility for the final judgment.
The company is initially launching two agentic workflows: a rapid triage assessment for screening invention disclosures and a more extensive patentability report offering feature-by-feature reasoning and cited references. Its existing search and intelligence tools will continue under the Clerq brand.
The rebrand closely follows themes Curcio discussed in a recent interview with LegalTech.ca. She argued that domain-specific, workflow-embedded AI occupies a different position from general-purpose legal assistants because patent language has its own structure, terminology and technical reasoning.
Curcio also identified context as a critical ingredient for effective agentic systems. An agent equipped with the right domain knowledge can spend its resources completing an assignment instead of first trying to understand the field. Clerq builds its new workflows on the patent research engine the company has developed since 2021.
The shift also reflects Curcio’s prediction that AI will increasingly move patent professionals away from routine execution and toward strategy and judgment. With Clerq, the company is positioning its technology not simply as a tool lawyers use to search, but as an AI clerk capable of performing substantive work under their direction.
