This year, Athennian celebrates 10 years in business.
Founded in 2016 by Adrian Camara, the Calgary-based legal and tax management firm continues to advance its technology platform.
After raising a US$33M Series B round in 2022 from Centana Growth Partners and others, Athennian has been rolling out incremental enhancements, including AI-powered tools that better position legal, tax, and finance teams for faster compliance amid tightening global regulations.
Athennian’s cloud-based platform aims to serve as a single source of truth for complex corporate structures, automating workflows for entity formation, maintenance, compliance filings, and reporting across jurisdictions.
Key capabilities include AI-generated registrations and people records, enhanced structure charts, automated ownership reports, global audit trails, and integrations such as with Power Automate.
Legal and governance teams are increasingly expected to provide operational support, often with limited resources and under intense scrutiny, according to Camara.
Entity data is fragmented across systems, spreadsheets, and advisors, he argues, and processes rely heavily on manual coordination and institutional knowledge.
“Governance is largely still treated as documentation,” says Camara, “rather than infrastructure.”
As a result, teams may find themselves operating reactively, while decisions might take longer than they should. Risk can also increase, “not because people are careless, but because the system itself does not support speed or clarity,” according to Camara.
Athennian’s flagship offering, Governance Ops, “is not about adding more process, but rather about creating the operational foundation that allows governance to scale with the business,” says Camara. This means centralized, reliable data; collaborative workflows; systems “that make it easier to act with confidence under pressure.”
