BLG Adopts CoCounsel in Firmwide AI Expansion

News Brief, December 3, 2025

BLG has expanded its Thomson Reuters partnership by adopting CoCounsel firmwide, integrating AI-powered research and drafting tools across all practice and business teams.

Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) has expanded its long-standing partnership with Thomson Reuters by adopting CoCounsel across the firm, deepening a multi-decade relationship that already includes Westlaw and Practical Law. The move brings advanced AI research, drafting, and document analysis capabilities to lawyers, law clerks, paralegals, and business services teams nationwide.

BLG said the decision reflects shifting client expectations and the growing need for legal teams to reimagine workflows in a rapidly evolving environment. By embedding AI into daily practice, the firm aims to free up time for higher-value strategic work while increasing agility in serving clients. Leaders also described a talent imperative: emerging legal professionals expect to work with sophisticated AI tools that will shape the future of practice.

As part of its firmwide AI strategy, BLG conducted a comprehensive evaluation of available tools, piloting multiple versions of CoCounsel before selecting the platform. The firm cited three factors in its decision: integration and workflow alignment with Westlaw and Practical Law; strong governance and security standards consistent with BLG’s approach to responsible AI; and CoCounsel’s product maturity and long-term roadmap.

“We see this technology as fundamentally transforming how legal work gets done,” said David Di Paolo, National Managing Partner and CEO of BLG. “It allows our lawyers to spend their time on the high-impact, complex problem-solving that clients really need from us.”

The firm’s decision was guided by a structured review process and a value-creation framework to support long-term adoption and ensure lasting impact. According to Di Paolo, clients are increasingly asking how AI can drive efficiency, and BLG sees an opportunity to enhance value while meeting rising expectations.

With CoCounsel now embedded across its national platform, BLG strengthens its role as one of only two full-service Canadian firms partnering at this scale with Thomson Reuters. The adoption underscores BLG’s commitment to responsible AI use and positions the firm to attract the next generation of legal talent.
