Spellbook Powers New AI Training Program for Junior Lawyers

Robert Lewis, October 1, 2025

Toronto-based legal AI startup Spellbook is teaming up with global law firm Kennedys to launch a first-of-its-kind training program designed to prepare junior lawyers for an AI-powered profession.

The initiative will embed Spellbook’s drafting and review technology into structured training modules, giving junior lawyers simulated opportunities to practice the kinds of tasks that AI is increasingly reshaping. Participants will engage in real-world-style drafting and review exercises, AI-assisted issue spotting, and structured feedback loops designed to replicate coaching traditionally provided by senior colleagues.

“As AI accelerates change across the legal sector, we have a responsibility to ensure junior lawyers aren’t left behind. This programme is about creating AI-fluent lawyers: professionals who can combine deep legal reasoning with the ability to work seamlessly alongside AI tools,” said John Bruce, Senior Partner at Kennedys.

Kennedys, which has more than 2,900 team members across 45 offices in 18 countries, is taking a proactive step to address a challenge facing many firms: as AI and automation reduce the volume of junior-level work, new lawyers risk losing the practical exposure needed to build judgment and experience. By embedding Spellbook into training, Kennedys aims to safeguard skill development while preparing lawyers for the realities of modern practice.

Pilots will roll out later this year in the US and UK, with lessons and outcomes expected to be shared across the wider profession.
